Students

The Health Scholars Program aims to:

1. Recruit qualified under-represented students into CSUSB graduate programs that address health
disparities.
2. Provide a transition program for beginning graduate students to develop needed competencies to
perform effectively as research assistants in health disparity research.
3. Support four graduate students per year with research assistantships in health disparity research.
4. Provide research-training opportunities for the four research assistants, with faculty at research-
intensive universities currently involved in health disparity research.
5. Provide a mentorship program to facilitate students continuation on to doctoral training related to health disparities curriculum, practice, and research.

Scheduled to begin in January, and continue for the remainder of the academic year, Health Scholars will be
paired with a researcher engaging in health disparities research funded by this grant. Additionally, Health
Scholars will be expected to attend a weekly seminar designed to help prepare them for engaging in health
disparities research as well as further prepare them for doctoral training in fields related to health disparities
research. In return Health Scholars will receive graduate research assistant positions, paying $18 per
hour at 20 hours/week, to assist them in pursuing their education and research training. Health
Scholars will also have travel funds to work with faculty from other universities on health disparities
research.
